QLD: Preliminary report on Coconut Island plane crash due today

The Bureau of Air Safety Investigation's preliminary report into a plane crash at Coconut
Island last month will be available today.

Bureau deputy director ALAN STRAY says three women were killed when the UZU Air plane
crashed into the beach 70 nautical miles north-east of Thursday Island on January 17.

Meanwhile, airline operators in the Torres Strait may soon be legally running commuter
flights after an apparent compromise by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.

The move follows a series of meetings between CASA officials and operators including Cape
York Air and Northern Air Services.

CASA hasn't confirmed the details, but it's understood that it may introduce a special
category which would take into account operation difficulties in the area.
