Qld: Toxic waste causes outrage

A plan to ship 100 tonnes of toxic waste from 10 Pacific islands to Brisbane has sparkedcommunity outrage.

It will be shipped from the islands, trucked through Brisbane and treated at the BCDTechnologies plant at Narangba, north of Brisbane.

It's being coordinated by the federal government agency AusAID, with the first shipmentof waste due to arrive after June next year.

FRAN JELL -- spokeswoman for the East Narangba Community Action Group -- says the governmentshould consider other alternatives, such as treating the material on the islands.

But a spokesman for BCD Technologies says the plant has a clean record after 17 yearsof processing waste.

And the spokesman says the new waste is exactly the same material the plant's alwaysbeen treating.
