Vic; Berri fruit drinks to close Melbourne plant

A union organiser says drinks company Berri is to close its factory in Melbourne's
northern suburbs, throwing 50 staff out of work.

Berri's Melbourne factory, in Reservoir, is the second oldest of the beverages company's
Australian plants.

The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union says its age, combined with a lack of room
to expand, has been given as the reason for the decision to close down.

AMWU foods division assistant secretary JENNY DOWELL says the company broke the bad
news to staff at a meeting today that the plant will shut its doors for the last time
in five weeks.

A company spokesman could not be contacted for comment today.
