Qld: Toxic waste causes outrage

A plan to ship 100 tonnes of toxic waste from 10 Pacific islands to Brisbane has sparkedcommunity outrage.

It will be shipped from the islands, trucked through Brisbane and treated at the BCDTechnologies plant at Narangba, north of Brisbane.

It's being coordinated by the federal government agency AusAID, with the first shipmentof waste due to arrive after June next year.

FRAN JELL -- spokeswoman for the East Narangba Community Action Group -- says the governmentshould consider other alternatives, such as treating the material on the islands.

But a spokesman for BCD Technologies says the plant has a clean record after 17 yearsof processing waste.

And the spokesman says the new waste is exactly the same material the plant's alwaysbeen treating.

Vic; Berri fruit drinks to close Melbourne plant

A union organiser says drinks company Berri is to close its factory in Melbourne's
northern suburbs, throwing 50 staff out of work.

Berri's Melbourne factory, in Reservoir, is the second oldest of the beverages company's
Australian plants.

The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union says its age, combined with a lack of room
to expand, has been given as the reason for the decision to close down.

AMWU foods division assistant secretary JENNY DOWELL says the company broke the bad
news to staff at a meeting today that the plant will shut its doors for the last time
in five weeks.

A company spokesman could not be contacted for comment today.

SA: Labor says Premier and minister at odds over Le Mans future

The South Australian opposition says it wants the state government to clear up confusion
over the future of the Le Mans race.

Shadow Treasurer KEVIN FOLEY says while Premier JOHN OLSEN was closing the door on
the future of the race in Adelaide, his tourism minister JOAN HALL was talking about the
possibility of future races.

Mr OLSEN announced the decision yesterday not to pursue an option for further Le Mans
events so the government could free up about $8 million of taxpayer funds.

Fed: New breast cancer drug could still be subsidised Tambling

The federal government says the door has not been closed on government funding for
new breast cancer drug, Herceptin.

The Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee considered adding the new drug to the
Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme at a meeting earlier this month but decided it was too
expensive.

A report in the Sydney Morning Herald says about 30 Australian women with advanced
breast cancer are paying $1,000 a week for the drug and as many as 3,000 more could benefit
from it if the government subsidises it.

Herceptin is an antibody against a growth factor protein called HER2 which is over-produced
in the cancer cells of about a third of women with breast cancer that has spread to other
parts of their body.

By suppressing the growth factor, the drug reduces the speed of the spread of the cancer.

Parliamentary Health Secretary GRANT TAMBLING says the issue is not closed but at the
moment the cost to the taxpayer of subsidising the drug is too high.
